Students create hundreds of butterflies for world record bid

Student volunteers in Cambridge are helping local charity Born to be Beautiful reach new heights in a world record attempt to ‘fly’ the largest number of origami butterflies.

In just one day, the students – all volunteering through the National Citizen Service programme – have made 2,000 butterflies towards next month's world record attempt when the charity stages its bid in the Grafton shopping centre.

The Cambridge-based charity, which provides beauty therapy training and skills to victims of poverty and slavery, will put the butterflies together with hundreds more to make one giant butterfly for the record attempt.

The students, the majority studying at Cambridge Regional College, are working to raise awareness of a number of local charities during their Government-backed three-week summer programme.

Fundraising plans include activities in the city to help raise money for EACH – East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices – homeless charity Wintercomfort, and a selfie day for Blue Smile, a Cambridge charity supporting children with mental health difficulties.

Born to be Beautiful’s world record attempt takes place at the Grafton centre on 19 September.
