Supermarket staff put best feet forward to support new charity of the year

A charity that works with disabled and older people and their families and carers has been chosen by customers of a popular Cambridge supermarket as their next charity of the year.

The Sainsbury’s store in Sidney Street, Cambridge, gave the choice to customers as to which charity they should support over the coming 12 months.

And Papworth Trust came out on top in the vote, with staff already planning an 18-mile charity walk to kick-start their fundraising drive.

Store manager Simon Cross said he was delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile cause - and one of which he had first-hand experience.

He explained: “This year Sainsbury’s wanted to give customers the choice so they could really embrace our charity work in store.

“I am delighted they have chosen Papworth Trust, a charity that does so much to help disabled people in our community and across the country.

“We have a member of staff who has been supported by Papworth Trust for a long time, so we know how crucial their services and support are.”

Staff will now get their walking boots on for an 18-mile trek between their stores in Cambridge and Ely on 16 September.

Jo Revitt, corporate partnership fundraiser at Papworth Trust, said: “We would like to thank all the customers who voted for Papworth Trust and everyone connected with the Sainsbury’s store who I know will support us brilliantly throughout the year.”

Papworth Trust runs a range of leisure and learning activities at its Cambridge Centre in Hawthorn Way to help and support disabled people find work.
