Patrick entered and presented the paper in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), 2016 Emerging Engineer Awards. The East of England Final was held at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge on 9 March. He will go forward to the next round where papers from all ICE regions are considered and three selected for a national final later this year.
The event saw a first for the region with one entrant presenting remotely from India. Although it was midnight over there Reena Bhavsar from Atkins had no difficulty in presenting his paper about replacing expansion joints on the M25.
Reena was followed by Douglas Bale also from Mott MacDonald’s Cambridge office. His paper was titled ‘The Lee Tunnel Flow Transfer System - Design and Construction of twin, 2.4m diameter, steel, elevated pipelines.’ As runners up Reena and Douglas each received £100.
Patrick and Douglas are colleagues working in the same office so it was particularly pleasing to hear how they helped each other with preparing and rehearsing their papers.
The Emerging Engineer Awards were formerly known as the Graduate and Student Papers Competition and have been running since 1951 to promote and reward excellence in the communication of civil engineering issues and ideas.
