Tech Talk: 'Deep neural networks for sound event detection'

Audio Analytic is delighted to announce the speaker for its next Tech Talk lecture. Emre Çakir will present a summary of his findings from the seven publications in his PhD thesis titled “'Deep neural networks for sound event detection'.

He will investigate the performance of the more recently developed deep learning algorithms in various detection tasks such as real-life sound event detection, rare event detection and bird audio detection. He will also propose a feature learning algorithm based on the combination of neural networks and the domain knowledge from human auditory perception.

The Tech Talk, which will take place at Audio Analytic's office in Quayside, Cambridge on Wednesday 13th March, is free to attend and doors open at 18:00, with the talk starting promptly at 18:30. The talk will be followed by Q&A and networking around nibbles. Audio Analytic is recruiting so this is also a fantastic occasion to come and chat with its staff.

The team says: "We are delighted to invite prominent machine learning and audio processing scientists to talk about their work and hope that these talks will provide inspiration to the Cambridge Machine Learning community."

More on Emre Çakir

Emre Çakir graduated from METU, Turkey with a BSc. Honours degree in Electronics Engineering in 2013. Then he completed his MSc. (signal processing major) and PhD (information technology) studies with distinction in Tampere Univ. of Tech. (TUT), Finland in January 2015 and February 2019, respectively.

Emre has been a member of the Audio Research Group in TUT under the supervision of Tuomas Virtanen since 2014 and he was employed as a Software Engineering Intern at Google under supervision of Dan Ellis in 2018.

He is mainly working on audio information retrieval (sound event detection, musical instrument classification/synthesis etc.) in real-life environments with deep convolutional and recurrent neural networks.
