When travellers are going abroad it may be necessary to learn how best they can protect themselves from diseases and other health risks related to foreign travel, particularly in higher risk countries. Insurers warn that one in four Britons fail to get jabs before travelling – and may find their policy doesn't pay if they fall ill
To obtain accurate up to date information on risks, visit the NHS website www.nathnac.org - the National Travel Health Network and Centre.
This is a very useful website as it is independent and can give information on vaccines one may need.
All vaccines last for varying amounts of time and so the next step is to book an appointment to see your health professional either at your GP or a specialist clinic to see how they can help. They would be able to give you a booster to your UK vaccines if you need one and may also be able to give you travel injections and advice on malaria tablets.
There are shortages of both yellow fever and typhoid vaccines at the moment in the UK, fortunately The Travel Clinic Ltd both in Cambridge and Ipswich has managed to negotiate adequate stocks of both vaccines for the time being.
Recently there has been news in the press that insurers are not paying out if travellers have not protected themselves against tropical diseases so remember, babies and children also need protection.
Also check out the Foreign and Commonwealth website for information about the country in which you are traveling and the most common crime and health risks.
