Professor Iain Martin, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, welcomed several guests including Dr Saul Humphrey, Managing Director of Construction (East) for Morgan Sindall, to the topping out ceremony, which traditionally marks the stage when the last beam is placed on top of a new structure during its construction.
The centre is due to open in September and will incorporate a 300-seat lecture theatre adapted for science and a 200-station biosciences laboratory. It will bring together teaching, postgraduate and staff facilities for four departments: Life Sciences; Biomedical and Forensic Sciences; Computing and Technology; and Psychology.
Professor Martin said: “Our new Science Centre will allow us to meet the increasing demand for our science courses and provide students and staff with a world-class facility in which to learn, teach and carry out research.
“We recognise the importance to our region of STEM-based education and skills, and the opening of the building in September is a key component of our strategy.”
Bob Ensch, Morgan Sindall area director, said: “We’re delighted to be celebrating this milestone in the construction of this key centre for Anglia Ruskin University. The completed centre will enable the university to bring together its taught, research and staff facilities across STEM departments under one roof, creating a real hub of expertise and innovation.
“Our team is making good progress on the development and we’re looking forward to delivering a great project for the university.”
Anglia Ruskin saw the number of STEM students increase by 51% between 2007 and 2013, and the new building will enable the recruitment of more students to take account of the increase in demand and the needs of industry.

Topping out ceremony takes place at new Science Centre

Anglia Ruskin University staff and representatives from main contractors Morgan Sindall have celebrated the topping out of a new £45million Science Centre in Cambridge which will enable more science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students to benefit from state-of-the-art facilities.
