Update on Yellow Fever vaccine shortage

The Travel Clinic reports on the availability of Yellow Fever vaccine.

The Travel Clinic writes:

Following the unexpected manufacturing issue that led to a delay in the availability of the single dose vial + pre-filled syringe presentation of Stamaril®, Sanofi Pasteur MSD sourced a multi dose presentation of Stamaril® to ensure that doses were still available within the market.

The multi dose vials contain 10 doses and come as a box of 10 vials (i.e. 100 doses) which have been priced at the same price as 100 doses of the single presentation, although it is not guaranteed we can get 10 doses from one vial and failure to reach this number will lead to financial loss for practices and wasted doses mean some people will be unprotected against this potentially deadly disease.

This has been a difficult stage over the past year, as very few clinics have the amount of patients to need 10 doses within the six hour window of time required to use up the multidose vial.  NATHNAC (National Travel Health Network and Centre) has taken a proactive approach to this situation, including the monitoring of YFVC stock levels by use of a survey, and the data is then used to estimate the level of vaccine stock compromise and has been used to inform relevant authorities of the difficulties YFVC and travellers. Where YFVC have agreed, they have also provided details of those with vaccine in stock which will then allow YFVC without stock to signpost their clients to centres with supplies of vaccine.

We still have vaccine available in both our clinics (Ipswich and Cambridge) and we will be offering this service to the travelling public, but have had to increase the price, to reflect the logistical difficulties and potential financial loss.  We have also managed to get some further doses from a pharmaceutical wholesaler at much inflated prices, so we have to pass this price rise on to our clients to enable us to cover costs.
