ViewRanger launches #Walk2016 challenge to get the world on its feet

ViewRanger, the outdoor discovery app, has launched a challenge to encourage people to get out walking and get active in 2016. #Walk2016 is the first challenge of its kind by ViewRanger, and users can sign up to walk or hike 1000, 500 or 250 miles over the course of the year.

Once people have chosen the challenge that suits them best they can find routes on the ViewRanger app to help them to achieve their goals. Users can track their own routes and record each mile walked, sharing their progress with followers along the way. A running total of miles completed can be viewed at my.viewranger.com/challenges.

The challenge isn’t just for those in Britain – it’s part of a global community, with ViewRanger users across the world from the USA to Slovenia signing up to walk their way through 2016.

Inspiration for the challenge came partly from ViewRanger user Nigel Ayers who set himself the goal of walking 1000 miles in 2015, using the app to find new routes. After successfully completing his challenge, Nigel has advice for people taking part in #Walk2016: “I think you have to know your own physical limits, so increase your mileage gradually. A lot is made of how walking is good for you; even the shortest of walks offer great benefits.”

ViewRanger adventure racing ambassador Hetty Key was one of the first to sign up and has pledged to complete 1000 miles: “As soon as ViewRanger told me about #Walk2016 I jumped at the chance to sign up. I'm always looking for a challenge and ways to get fitter and stronger doing things I actually enjoy, and this is the perfect fit. The thing I love most about #Walk2016 is how accessible it is – anyone can get involved.

“Whatever the weather, the outdoors is always there and totally free to enjoy. From getting fitter to improving my photography skills, there are so many benefits to getting outside. Plus I know that by aiming to reach that 20-mile target each week I am sure to discover even more stunning new routes and places around the UK and beyond.”

Craig Wareham, ViewRanger co-founder, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to launch #Walk2016 as we strongly believe in the health and wellbeing benefits of walking. People are often surprised by the wealth of trails right on their doorstep they can discover using the ViewRanger app and this is the perfect opportunity to get outdoors more.

“By signing up for the challenge and pledging miles, ViewRanger users are making a commitment to not only walk more but discover some fantastic scenery in Great Britain and abroad.”

ViewRanger offers detailed topographic maps for over 20 countries and trail guides from guidebook authors and tourism organizations around the world, as well as from the app’s global user community.

Using ViewRanger, routes can be followed easily with the user’s current position displayed on a detailed map, with the active navigation system alerting the user if they veer off track. Photographs, waypoint information, and other helpful content for each route are included within the digital route guides.  Route guides and maps are downloaded and stored on the mobile device, so no mobile network signal is required to use the app out on the trail.

ViewRanger can also be used to record walks, rides, and other adventures which can later be shared with friends and family via social media or email.
