More than 1.8 million passengers travelled through Stansted last month, almost 83,000 or 5 per cent more than November last year. The total number of passengers in the 12 months to November 2017 rose to over 25.9 million passengers, up 7.2 per cent over the previous year.
November also saw a significant increase in cargo tonnage, with a 12.5 per cent jump to almost 26,000 tonnes. The annual running total was 4.6% higher at 263,000 tonnes.
Over the past month, the airport’s contribution to regional growth and employment opportunities have been recognised with visits by key politicians.
The Minister of State for Industry, Claire Perry, was on hand to launch the construction phase of the innovative £11m Stansted Airport college, on the day the Government launched its Industrial Strategy.
Earlier in the month, Shadow Transport Secretary, Andy McDonald MP, and Shadow Aviation Minister, Karl Turner MP, came to Stansted to see how the airport is planning to make best use of its existing runway capacity and improve the UK’s global connectivity over the next decade.
London Stansted’s Commercial Director, Martin Jones, said: “This is the busiest November on record and a strong start to Stansted’s winter flying schedule. Numbers of passengers have been boosted by the success of the first winter sun and ski flights from Jet2.com, and we’ve also had an impressive increase in cargo tonnage passing through the airport.
“With the construction of our new aviation skills college underway, and the start of enabling works for the first stages of a terminal transformation project to increase check in desks and improve passenger experience, these are exciting times.
“Thanks to the continued increase in passenger numbers and new route announcements including new low-cost transatlantic flights from Primera Air and WOW Air from 2018, we anticipate this growth will continue into the new year and beyond.”
