This lunchtime meeting is the first of the Consumer Science Lunchtime Seminar Series. The Consumer Science Forum is aimed at bridging knowledge between academia and businesses. The Forum organiser, Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd hopes to present and discuss the latest research findings within the areas of consumer psychology, marketing and consumer behaviour.
Each talk will be followed by an opportunity to discuss what has been presented. There will be a total of 5 seminars throughout the year. It is hoped that the lunchtime seminar series will provide a forum for business and academics to discuss consumer-based science and provide a bridge from academic theory to practical commercial application.
In order to attend the seminars and the lunch the Forum asks for an annual contribution of £105 (inc. VAT) per person. This fee is to partially cover the travel of the invited speakers and the lunch itself. However, please do note that the seminar series is subsidised by Anglia Ruskin University.
If you are interested in attending please pay the fee and register here: http://store.anglia.ac.uk/product-catalogue/faculty-of-science-and-technology/psychology-department/consumer-science-forum

IS WORD OF MOUTH ALL THAT IS CLAIMED TO BE?
Speaker: Professor Chanaka Jayawardhena, Hull University Business School
Word of Mouth is a topic that has been extensively studied for decades in numerous disciplines both in and outside of marketing. The aim of this talk will be to give an overview of some of the research on Word of Mouth (WOM) undertaken, especially in the service marketing field, drawing upon the author’s own research on the topic. After a brief introduction to some of the early research on the topic, the presentation will focus on two key themes: what drives WOM, and how recipients of WOM respond to the WOM received about competing service providers.
About Profesor Jayawardhena
Chanaka is a Professor of Marketing at Hull University Business School (HUBS). He is the HUBS Graduate Research Director and the Research Director for the Marketing Group. Professor Jayawardhena’s research investigates relevant and interesting problems that potentially develop impactful findings for both academia and the practitioners. Current research focuses on customer experience in the virtual (the internet, self-service technologies, mobile, etc.) and service marketplaces. Particular interests lie in exploring how organizations use technology in attracting, developing and maintaining customer relationships; how consumers evaluate services, the resultant customer experiences, the influence of social media and word of mouth on consumer decision making in the consumption of services, among others.

This talk will outline the importance of touch in consumption and explain how the tactile sense contributes to how we perceive products and services. It will also look at the implications for online consumer behaviours.
