World first IoT demo at Cambridge conference

A world first public demonstration of new wireless technology set to accelerate delivery of the Internet of Things will be held at a Cambridge UK tech conference & expo later this week (June 27).

Argon Design Ltd, the Cambridge technology and product development business, will show delegates to the Nerve summit how the new Weightless communications protocol – born and developed in the city – can facilitate Machine2Machine connectivity.

Argon Design innovators are at the heart of the Weightless protocol – an essential bridge between the sensor developers and the ultimate deliverers of the IoT vision.

Not only is Argon Design active in the standard, but also it has developed some of the technology. It works with the Weightless Marketing SIG promoting and educating businesses on the enormous impact this technology can have.

Matthew Bailey of Argon Design is excited about the opportunity to showcase Weightless at Nerve. “This is an exciting new Machine to Machine (M2M) wireless communications technology and we’re thrilled to be demonstrating this publicly for the first time at Nerve.

“Weightless has been summarised as ‘the price of Bluetooth, but with the range of cellular’ but it is much more powerful than that and – fittingly for the Nerve agenda – promises to be a real game-changer in the delivery of IoT.

“The demonstration will showcase a bridge that has a number of ‘strain gauge sensors linked to Weightless terminals. The terminals send sensor data Over the Air (OTA) to a Weightless base station which, in turn, delivers the data to a live Bridge Condition Monitoring application.

“The Weightless demonstrator showcases this revolutionary M2M technology in action, which is set to both disrupt and significantly enable M2M markets that have been estimated at 50 billion devices by 2020 (McKinsey, 2012).

“Delegates at Nerve will be able to see Weightless in action and that will help people realise the potential power of this technology.”

Argon Design is an international technology and product development partner. It develops technologies and products for Fortune 500 and FTSE100 brands, and SMEs.

Bailey said: “Argon develops IoT/M2M solutions across a variety of markets using existing technologies and with Weightless added to our portfolio, we are uniquely placed to develop IoT/M2M solutions for global business.”

Bailey is also a speaker at Nerve and on June 27 joins with ARM’s Gary Atkinson and leading US entrepreneurs Jonathan Beninson, Amber Nystrom, Chris Rezendez and Peter Johnson to deliver a series of talks topped by a no-punches-pulled debate on how IoT can change the world for the better. The IoT is a strong theme throughout the three-day Nerve summit. Warren East, CEO of ARM, starts the ball rolling in his talk on June 25 and Brinda Dalal of the Institute for the Future, also addresses the environmental impacts of IoT in her speech on June 27.
