World Laureates Forum (WLF) completes conference venue structural capping

After 10 months of construction, the permanent Conference Venue of the World Laureates Forum(WLF) in Lingang New Area has completed its structural capping and entered the final decoration stage in an all-round way. The project is expected to be completed and delivered at the end of September, and it will be put into use in October. The WLF's permanent Conference Venue has a total construction area of 228,000 square metres, consisting of the main building conference centre and two towers in the east and west. In October this year, the 5th World Laureates Forum will be held here.

The WLF's permanent Conference Venue has a total construction area of 228,000 square meters, consisting of the main building conference centre and two towers in the east and west. From a distance, the whole building looks like a pair of open wings or a door open to the outside.

A closer look shows that most of the glass curtain wall has been installed in the L-shaped conference centre. The two towers in the east and west standing tall have also been capped.

The Lingang Speed

Since its launch on March 28 last year, the project has grown like new bamboo shoots in early spring, and the average daily "grow height" of ground buildings exceeds 1.5 metres

  • By Day 171, the construction of 60,000 square meters of basement has been completed

  • By Day 192, the Conference Centre structure has been capped

  • By Day 226, the overall structure of the project is completed

After the remaining work on the façade of the Conference Centre is completed, the curtain wall work of the supporting building tower will also start in early 2022. The completion work will be fully rolled out to speed up the final phase.

The place when the best brains meet is futuristic.

The goal is to get the Venue ready in time for holding the fifth World Laureates Forum in October this year. This annual event held in Shanghai has attracted winners of the world's top scientific awards, including the Nobel Prize, the Wolf Prize, and the Turing Award.

What would a place be like that accommodates the world's "best brains" to work and hold meetings and seminars ?

In the WLF's permanent conference venue, elements full of futuristic sense can be found everywhere.

Walking into the conference centre under construction, you can see that the main conference hall has taken shape, and there are different functional areas such as a round table conference hall and a banquet hall next to it.

In the future, this will be the place where the "best brains" brainstorm.

In addition, there is a digital library in the conference centre, as well as the first comprehensive theatre with more than 800 seats in the new area, which can meet the needs of scientists for work and leisure after meetings, and will also be open to the public on weekdays.

The two towers of the WLF venue are a supporting hotel and a serviced apartment respectively.

Among them, the hotel lobby will include an AI interactive experience area, through the application of scientific simulation, naked eye 3D, lighting effects and other means to simulate the annual scientific achievements, and make the scientific research results visualised and fun.

The building is also infused with the concept of green and low carbon.

On the second-floor roof platform of the Conference Centre, rows of steel frames stand in a net shape. These are photovoltaic mounts. Soon, this will be covered with photovoltaic panels, which will supply part of the electricity supply in the Conference Centre in the future. Between photovoltaic panels, planting roofs will also be adopted for energy saving and low carbon practice.

A community of the World Laureates emerges

The area where the WLF Conference Venue is located is a world laureate community of about 3.2 square kilometres (hereinafter referred to as the "WLF Community"). the WLF Community is positioned as a "world-class source of major frontier science in the Lingang new era", focusing on major scientific issues and forward-looking basic research. The planning and construction includes WLF permanent conference venue, joint research and development centre, achievement transformation centre, and urban functional supporting facilities such as Mobius Science Theme Park.

Looking out from the second-floor platform of the WLF Conference Venue, there are also tower cranes all around.

Just next to the Conference Venue site, a high-standard joint R&D centre led by Nobel Prize winners, aimed at life sciences and artificial intelligence has started construction, with a total construction area of 100,000 square metres. It is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2023.

On the other side, the Mobius Science Theme Park has also started construction, with a total area of about 14.3 hectares. After completion, it will become the core and largest green space in the WLF community, and an iconic Mobius Strip will be built in the park. According to the needs of scientific talents, some high-quality residential facilities, schools, parks and green space and other public service facilities will be provided in the community to create an environment where domestic and foreign talents would come and stay.

Opening the planning map of the Lingang New Area, a larger international innovation collaboration area has also appeared on the paper.

The planned total area of the area is about 6.95 square kilometres. In addition to the WLF community, it also includes the Science and Technology Innovation Headquarters Bay and the Science and Technology Innovation City community. Among them, the Science and Technology Headquarters Bay, which is adjacent to Dishui Lake, has attracted 23 science and technology headquarter enterprise projects such as China Micro, Anheng, China Railway Construction, and China Construction Science & Technology. On the south side of the Science and Technology City community, property carriers such as Innovation Crystal, Innovation Magic Square, Ocean Science and Technology Plaza, and Sea Cube Science and Technology Park have sprung up. There are also more than 300 R&D institutions, science and technology enterprises with more than 5,000 R&D personnel.

It is expected that at the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the International Innovation Collaboration Zone will introduce and build more than 30 first-class scientific research institutions and scientist workstations at home and abroad, gather 30,000 to 50,000 talents of various types, and add 1,000 new scientific and technological enterprises and R&D institutions. An idea agitated from the WLF Forum has taken root in the WLF community, and has been cultivated and grown in the vast number of technology companies-perhaps, this will become a reality in the near future.
