Lucy Wilson, External Relations Manager, explains: "As part of our spring programme, The Cosmos, four artists will be in residence for six weeks at Wysing from 1 April, exploring all things cosmic.
"We are looking for people with a hobby, interest or specialism relating to The Cosmos that who live within 20 miles of Bourn (Cambridge, Royston, St Ives, St Neots, Huntingdon and surrounding villages), to join these artists and take part in our programme during a public weekend or evening event: a talk, performance or activity.
"The specialism could be anything from astronomy to astrology, time travel to space exploration. Fact or fiction. Don't be shy - we are open to all suggestions and view The Cosmos as a starting point from which to explore ideas."
Previous public talks and events taking place as part of artists’ residencies at Wysing have included:
- a historian talking about the use of local stone in housing
- an archaeologist on how we interpret history through objects
- a farmer on hidden aspects of the local landscape
- a linguist on how language can inhibit our imaginations
- a wild food hunt led by a wild food expert
- a performance by a traditional music collective
- the interpretation of an artwork by an interior designer based in a neighbouring village.
All these contributions and activities have inspired the artists who have been in residence at the time, and been enjoyed by a wide range of people attending the events.
To register your interest email [email protected] or call 01954 718881 before 28th February. The events will be advertised in Wysing mailouts, e-bulletins and on its website.
WYSING ARTS CENTRE shapes new ways of working in the arts and challenges artists and audiences to re-think what is possible, often in partnership with each other. In the last five years this approach has led to the creation of extraordinary projects and experiences, and has made Wysing one of Europe’s leading centres for the visual arts. With a large rural site comprising 10 separate buildings including artists’ studios, educational and new media facilities, a gallery and project spaces; with an ongoing and innovative artistic programme of events, exhibitions, retreats and residencies; and a unique programme for young artists, Wysing Arts Centre is delivering a rich programme that is accessible on many levels to a range of people. Art developed at Wysing is increasingly shown at significant venues around the world, and Wysing is part of national networks including Plus Tate, the Arts Council National Portfolio and Own Art.
THE INSTITUTE OF BEYOND was Wysing’s year-long conceptual research institute consisting of a series of 12 artists’ residencies. The Institute’s artists interrogated three subject areas, Wrong Answers, Psychedelia and Overlooked Histories, through the contribution of scientists, surgeons, cultural theorists, historians, archaeologists, critics, writers and musicians, via public events that included conferences, in-conversations and artists’ presentations.
