ZEISS partners with Coleridge Community College as a CAP Employer Champion

CAP has recruited another Employer Champion to work in partnership with a local state secondary school. Carl Zeiss Microscopy Ltd has pledged to support Coleridge Community College, and the wider Parkside Federation, over the coming year. The partnership was announced during National Science and Engineering Week when Coleridge opened its doors to local businesses that use science, maths and engineering in their work.

ZEISS, which is based on Coldhams Lane near the South Cambridge secondary school, was eager to support students as they start to think about future careers.

“Our business is growing and we're always looking for talented young people with an interest in engineering. It’s critically important that we demonstrate to students the range of opportunities available in our industry. We have a successful apprenticeship programme approved as delivering the Engineering Council UK-SPEC requirements and we are keen to showcase the opportunities in our business but also across our sector overall,” said Bob Taylor, managing director of Carl Zeiss Microscopy Ltd. “We want to play our part in supporting the next generation of future talent and making sure they have the skills needed to be successful in securing employment.”

Beverly Jones, Principal of Coleridge Community College, said: “Partnerships with businesses are extremely important for the education of young people in 2014. Access to a wide range of adults and facilities enables students to appreciate the breadth of opportunities there are at a local national and international level. Both staff and students are inspired by experience of new and different ways of working, particularly in Science.

Daniel Aldridge from ZEISS together with some of their current apprentices will visit Coleridge on Tuesday March 18th to talk to students about working at ZEISS. The first cohort of students will visit ZEISS later that week to learn about the business and see how classroom physics is applied in a real work environment.

CAP's Employer Champion partnership is a new arrangement where businesses commit to supporting a local secondary school or college and improving the employability of students.
