Zinwave and Herbert Group discuss DAS in healthcare at DAS and Small Cells Europe Congress

Zinwave’s wideband DAS has eliminated mobile blind spots caused by building materials blocking RF signals from macro networks at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford, UK.

Zinwave, global providers of a unified connectivity platform for in-building wireless and IP coverage, and its UK channel partner, Herbert Group, will jointly explain how Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, UK is using Zinwave DAS technology to eliminated wireless blind spots at the DAS and Small Cells Europe Congress. The event is taking place in Munich from 8-10 December and Zinwave can be found on Booth Number 6.

The session is being co-presented by Derek Paton, President, International of Zinwave and Colin Eddison, Technical Director of Herbert Group, the company responsible for installing and commissioning the DAS at Broomfield Hospital.  Herbert Group identified Zinwave as having the best-in-class in-building wireless coverage solution five years ago and has subsequently incorporated Zinwave’s unique wideband DAS solution into its product portfolio.

Derek has over 30 years’ experience in wireless and international telecoms and has worked all over the world in various senior roles, focusing particularly on specialist wireless coverage solutions for high density buildings. Colin joined Herbert Group as Technical Director in 1999 and now champions the Zinwave DAS solution for Herbert within the UK commercial property & NHS hospital sectors.

Zinwave’s DAS was selected as the preferred solution by Broomfield Hospital because of its ability to support multi-operator services on a single hardware layer, making it the most affordable option for the NHS. Additionally, Zinwave’s DAS is based on fibre-optic cabling and has been installed utilising the hospital’s existing cabling infrastructure. This resulted in a fast, efficient and cost-effective deployment with minimal disruption to infrastructure, services, staff and patients.

Zinwave’s in-building wireless coverage system is the only wideband DAS on the market that is frequency-agnostic, supporting multiple services and frequencies regardless of protocol or modulation scheme, between 150MHz-2,700MHz. It removes the need for complex, multi-layer infrastructures associated with conventional installations and avoids the need for expensive and disruptive upgrades to support new services, making it completely future-proof.

“NHS organisations are under constant pressure to make best possible use of available funding,” Says Derek Paton, President, International, Zinwave. “Because our DAS is fibre-based we can make use of pre-installed cabling which significantly reduces installation costs. It supports all mobile services as well as internal pagers on a single hardware layer, resulting in reduced cost with higher utility.”

"Patient Safety was key to Broomfield Hospital and mobile phones had become indispensable to Consultants & Critical Care staff,” said Colin Eddison, Technical Director, Herbert Group. “We recommended the Zinwave DAS as the optimum solution, meeting their existing and future needs and simple to install. After an extensive evaluation & competitive tendering process they agreed with us! We worked very closely with the hospital’s IT team & project manager to deliver the installation quickly & incident free in the midst of their ongoing operations, especially their operating theatres & maternity ward. They concluded that "It's the best project we've ever done", something of which we are very proud.”

Zinwave’s in-building wireless coverage system has been deployed in several large hospitals across Europe including Martini Hospital and Erasmus University Hospital in the Netherlands. Broomfield Hospital is the first UK hospital to deploy a Zinwave DAS.
