Motivation Masterclass (Exploring Employee Engagement)

Good managers are often strongly aware of their personality, with its intrinsic strengths and potential weaknesses, and the personalities represented in their teams. They are interested in knowing what they can do to help create an environment in which each member of their team can be motivated and give their best.
The workshop will therefore explore the impact of different personalities on the culture of an organisation, and specifically how managers’ behaviour can influence culture, consciously or otherwise. Similarly, it will look at the significance of the different personalities of our team members, as well as their underlying attitudes and values, particularly regarding the Psychological Contract.
Whilst personality plays an important role, the workshop will also examine organisational environment and job design to understand the contribution they make.
A series of models demonstrating historical and current thinking on the subject of motivation will be included to anchor our discussions, and space for personal reflection and action planning will be created throughout the workshop.
The workshop duration is a half day with a small amount of reflective pre-work before attending.
The workshop will involve:
- Exploring topics through group discussions
- Input from the tutors on concepts, models and techniques
- Time for self-reflection and assessment
- Sharing ideas in pairs and small groups
- Identifying concrete actions to take away.
- Welcome, introductions, course overview, participant needs and expectations.
- The concept of the manager as a role model to set the scene for the workshop content, emphasising the need for congruency and authenticity in visual, verbal and non-verbal communication.
Models of Motivation
- The development of thinking on motivation, from the original thinking to the present day, emphasising the key concepts.
- The importance of objective setting and the provision of high-quality feedback, together with balancing support and challenge in managing performance.
- Motivation through a breadth of communication techniques, summarised as “push” and “pull.”
- Personal reflection: “How can I practically apply some, or all of this thinking?”.
Management style and personality
- The role that personality type can play in defining intrinsic management strengths and the potential weaknesses.
- Building on the theme of personality, the additional impact of underlying thoughts, beliefs and values.
- Personal reflection: “My team and their personality – what are the implications for motivation at an individual and collective level?”.
- Revisiting the role that management behaviour plays in shaping organisational culture, and the significance of role modelling.
- Personal reflection: “How can I influence the environment to foster high levels of motivation?”.
