Is bridging the AI digital divide a societal responsibility?

Tim, CEO of WaveLength: Last week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a debate organised by the BCS Digital Divide Specialist Group on a question that is becoming increasingly important...

Tim and other members of the panel sit side by side, Amy Low CPACC FRSA, Dr Lucy Caton and Melanie Calver.

Is bridging the AI digital divide a societal responsibility?

I argued against the motion, because I believe we need to look more closely at where responsibility lies.

AI has huge potential to improve accessibility, but we need to ensure that the responsibility for inclusive design sits with those developing and deploying these technologies, rather than leaving charities and civil society to address the barriers afterwards. Ultimately, people need not just access to AI, but the agency to shape how it works for them.

It was a great conversation on an increasingly important topic, with thoughtful perspectives from an excellent panel.
