Busy few weeks of community outreach at The Cambridge Building Society through hands-on support and local partnerships

It has been a busy few weeks of community outreach at The Cambridge Building Society, with team members showcasing their creativity to support homeless charities.

Volunteer creating a sign

A trio from the marketing team let their artistic side shine at Emmaus Cambridge last week as they curated content, signs, and noticeboards to support and highlight the work the charity does to support people transitioning out of homelessness.

It followed a day of litter picking and gardening by mortgage advisers at the charity’s headquarters and shop off the A10 in Landbeach.

Andrea Barnes, Digital Development Lead who helped with the content creation, said: “For us, contributing creatively like designing the entrance board to their shop was a small act that helped tell powerful stories and made people feel seen and valued.

“Hearing about one companion who had once lived a comfortable life but lost everything reminded us how quickly circumstances can change. The resilience and hope we witnessed was truly inspiring, and it highlighted how vital the work of Emmaus is.”

Volunteering is part of The Cambridge’s Making The Difference commitment which provides innovative ways to support the community and to help people have a home or shelter.

Emmaus, It Takes a City and Jimmy’s Cambridge are the society’s three community partners for 2025, with all three organisations receiving a grant and volunteer hours from the society’s team members to support their vital work.

Cat Strawbridge from Jimmy’s has been touring The Cambridge’s branches so staff can hear how their volunteering and fundraising are helping people move “from floor to front door”. The next stop on Cat’s tour is on Wednesday (May 21), where she will meet with team members from Cambridge’s customer contact centre.

Holly Smith, Customer Engagement Team Lead at the Central Cambridge store, said: “It was inspiring to hear from Cat and to learn more about the great work Jimmy’s is doing. The team really appreciated the chance to ask questions and better understand how we are directly supporting people through our partnership.”
