Having returned to a much dabbled-in hobby of sewing, Alice Synge found herself searching fruitlessly for modern sewing supplies. The seed was planted for a working-from-home business idea and in 2010 Alice took the plunge and set up her own online shop – and so Backstitch was born.
Fast forward four years and Backstitch had well and truly outgrown the spare room and good old bricks and mortar beckoned. When a unit became available at Burwash Manor, Alice acted and opened her shop, selling stylish and modern fabric, wool and haberdashery and running classes and workshops from the studio space in store.
As a keen stitcher herself, Alice stocks only products she would want to use, so the selection of stock has been curated to her modern sense of style and with keen attention to quality. In a rainbow of seasonal colours, at Backstitch you will find everything you could need for dressmaking, quilting, embroidery, cross-stitch and knitting. She stocks a great selection of patterns, books, kits and gifts too.
Backstitch also offers sewing machine servicing and repairs and as it’s so easy (and free) to park at Burwash, there’s no problem with dropping off and collecting.
Always happy to help customers with advice and opinions, Alice adds to this with an ever-evolving range of sewing and stitching classes as well as social sessions in the light and bright studio.
So, the Burwash premises really is needlecraft heaven but with its roots online, Backstitch has a fantastic web presence, offering a click and collect service, delivery, back-in-stock email alerts. Everything that you find online, you’ll find on the shelves in this very lovely shop.
