Applications close soon for Impulse 2026.
Round One deadline has now passed (2 February 2026)
Round Two deadline: 2 March 2026
Now in its 10th year, the Impulse Programme, delivered through the Maxwell Centre at the University of Cambridge, helps science and tech researchers develop innovative ideas into viable businesses through structured and personalised entrepreneur-led support.
Impulse is designed specifically for innovators working at the intersection of research and application. Many participants join with promising technologies at proof‑of‑concept stage, early validation from collaborators or technology transfer offices, and a growing desire to see their work make real‑world impact, but without certainty that entrepreneurship is the right path.
“The Impulse Programme plays a pivotal role in unlocking the entrepreneurial potential of young researchers, helping them turn a simple idea into a great venture.”
Dr Hermann Hauser, Amadeus Capital Partners, Impulse Board Member
Delivered part‑time over three months, Impulse offers a structured, researcher‑friendly framework to help participants test commercial potential, build confidence, and decide next steps with clarity. Running from late April to early July, the programme takes participants from early idea validation through to a refined investor pitch, without requiring them to step away from research or professional commitments.
A proven pathway from research to real‑world application
Impulse combines personal skills development with entrepreneur‑led mentoring and practical accelerator support. Through a programme of curated network events, workshops, talks and extended mentoring led by entrepreneurs with real-world venture experience, participants are guided to assess the strength of their ideas, explore markets, refine value propositions and understand what building a venture would realistically involve.
Over three months, participants are given time and space, alongside challenge and support, to test assumptions, develop commercial understanding and build confidence as potential founders.
“I had a great experience with the mentors at Impulse. It was invaluable to discuss my business with people who had been through the same journey, understood the challenges, and helped me channel my efforts in the most effective way.”
Ruben Ruiz‑Mateos Serrano
Since its inception in 2017, Impulse has built an extraordinary track record:
£350m+ raised in follow‑on funding
1,000+ jobs created
Companies founded across AI, robotics, MedTech, life sciences, advanced materials and deep technology
Impulse alumni include founders of Riverlane, Abselion, Nu Quantum, Xampla, Echion Technologies, Wave Photonics, AllFocal Optics, Semarion, Sortera Bio and About:Energy.
Many participants join without a company, funding or prior commercial experience. They leave with informed conviction, whether that means progressing towards incorporation and investment, forming a founding team, or deciding that the timing is not yet right.
Innovation at the cutting edge
Recent cohorts, including the 2025 cohort, highlight the breadth and ambition of ideas emerging from the Impulse programme, particularly in deep‑tech and science‑led domains.
One participant explored in‑memory computing: A radically different computing architecture that integrates data storage and processing to significantly improve the speed and energy efficiency of AI systems, representing a potential step‑change in how future AI is deployed.
Another focused on developing next‑generation electronic skin for robots, enabling high‑resolution force and temperature sensing inspired by human touch. Applications range from surgical robotics and precision manufacturing to automated agriculture, addressing real‑world challenges from labour shortages to food waste.
These examples reflect Impulse’s emphasis on high‑impact, science‑ and technology‑led innovation, often well before technologies are ready for spin‑out or investment.
“The Impulse programme was genuinely transformational for me - it helped me build the confidence to transition out of academia.”
Irina Gostimskaya, Founder & CEO, DNA Ascendancy
What participants do over three months
Over three focused and transformative months, bookended by in‑person modules, Impulse participants actively work on their ideas through a blend of structured learning, personalised mentoring and peer exchange, on a part-time basis.
“The quality of mentoring on the Impulse programme was superb - particularly the regular check‑ins with our small‑group mentor, and the access to weekly bookable calls with a wide range of experts.”
James Flewellen, CEO & Co‑Founder, Kāhu SiliconBio
All participants take part in:
Interactive workshops (In-person or online)
Led by experienced entrepreneurs and founders, workshops focus on the practical realities of building technology‑led ventures. Core themes include customer discovery, business model development, IP strategy, fundraising and pitch preparation.
Mentor group sessions (In-person or online)
Participants are placed into carefully matched mentor groups of four to six people and receive 24+ hours of personalised mentoring. Mentors bring hands‑on venture experience and provide continuity, challenge and guidance as ideas evolve.
One‑to‑one expert discussions (online)
Participants can book individual sessions with lawyers, accountants, marketing specialists and other experts to address specific questions and barriers to progress.
Networking and community (in person)
Invitation‑only events connect participants with entrepreneurs, investors and corporate innovators from Cambridge and beyond, helping them build trusted relationships within the innovation ecosystem.
Pitch development and Demo Day (online)
Participants work closely with mentors to prepare a final pitch, delivered to a constructive panel of angels, VCs, entrepreneurs and corporate innovation leaders. Each cohort concludes with a Demo Day, showcasing work to investors, industry partners and the wider Cambridge innovation community.
After the programme, participants join our alumni, with exclusive access to specialist masterclasses and network events.
“The duration and structure of the programme fits well with a busy life and allows a depth of understanding along with meaningful interaction within the network.”
Jamie Urquhart, Co-Founder of ARM & Venture Capitalist, Impulse Mentor
Who should apply
Impulse welcomes applications from:
PhD candidates in the later stages of their doctorate
Postdoctoral researchers and research staff
Early‑stage entrepreneurs and technical founders
Applicants typically work in physical sciences, engineering, computer science, life sciences and related deep‑tech fields. You do not need a company or a fully‑formed business plan.
What matters is a strong technology idea, some early technical validation, and the curiosity to explore whether building a venture could be a meaningful next step.
Funding and fellowships
Full and partial funding is available through a range of fellowships provided by Impulse’s partners, supporting participation across disciplines and backgrounds.
“Impulse was instrumental in helping us transition from academic research to the startup world. It equipped us with the education and understanding of startup financial principles and conventions to effectively map our research from academia into a viable business. Without it, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
Andrew Kadis, Founder, Cambridge Vision Technology
