The Harley Barfield Project is a knife-crime awareness and fund-raising group set up in memory of 16-year-old Harley Barfield who was fatally stabbed in Haverhill in January,2023. It has been set up by his father Darryl Barfield, and Claire Summerlee, the co-founder of the project.
Darryl recently visited The EpiCentre to present the kit to Centre Manager Helen Earl and Receptionist Sian Garwood, where it has now been installed in the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) cabinet at the entrance to the centre.
He says: “We are very happy that the kit has gone into The EpiCentre’s AED cabinet and if anyone else would like one to please get in touch with the Harley Barfield Project.”
Centre Manager, Helen Earl, says: “A huge thank you to The Harley Barfield Project and Darryl for this incredibly valuable donation, which helps make The EpiCentre an even safer place for our community.“We're delighted to support this initiative - the kits can be lifesaving in cases of violence, but also in road traffic collisions and other trauma incidents involving loss of blood. The bleed control kit is stored with our defibrillator, registered on bleedmap.uk and people calling 999 will be directed as to how to access this. Our kit is the first one to have a special logo commemorating Harley on the kit itself.”
Bleed control kits, unlike standard first aid kits, contain essential equipment such as high-quality tourniquets, haemostatic gauze and trauma dressings, all of which can play a vital role in helping to slow or stop severe blood loss until emergency services arrive.
Claire, who, together with Darryl founded the Harley Barfield Project, has recently been short-listed for the Community Unsung Hero award in the MBCC (Multicultural Business and Community Champion) Awards.
