Empowering Neuro-Inclusion

Sarah our trainer delivering line management training stood at podium with the SAFER conversation model behind

We had the privilege of delivering neuro-inclusion training for line managers at East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA), focusing on building the confidence and practical skills necessary to support neurodivergent employees. We always love sharing both evidence-based strategies and lived experience with new teams, and seeing the team's commitment to creating an environment where everyone can succeed was incredibly rewarding.

The session was designed to be accessible, informative, and highly interactive. Rather than just presenting theory, we delved into the practicalities of management, generating superb conversation in the room. It is through these open discussions that we can truly deconstruct the uncertainty many managers feel about 'getting it wrong' when supporting neurodivergent team members.

One of the most significant takeaways and a mantra that resonated strongly with the group was the concept of 'managing the work not the person' When we shift our focus toward clear outcomes, flexible processes, and removing barriers, we move away from trying to 'fix' an individual and instead create a framework where their unique cognitive style can flourish.

During our time together, we explored several key areas:

  • How neurodiversity may show up for someone at work
  • Tools for handling sensitive situations and complex discussions
  • What are the legal implications for organisations and line managers
  • Where does the support end and performance management start

Feedback from the managers was extremely positive, who noted that the training provided 'helpful tools for how to handle situations and discussions.' For any neurodivergent employee, having a manager who is willing to be curious and adaptable can be transformative. It is the difference between an employee masking their difficulties to survive the day and an employee who feels valued enough to contribute their best work.

Moving beyond awareness and into meaningful action is how we build the workplaces of the future—workplaces where different ways of thinking are not just excepted, but celebrated. If you're interested in learning about how I can support your team pop me a message here
