As a motivation expert and advocate for positive mental health, I’d love to share with you how the Marie Kondo method, also known as the KonMari method, can transform your physical space AND your mindset. I find that decluttering our environments can lead to a more organised and joyful life and I’m going to show you how you can do it!
What is the Marie Kondo method?
Marie Kondo, a Japanese tidying expert and author, revolutionised the way we approach decluttering with her best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. The core principle of her method is simple: keep only those items that “spark joy” in your life. This approach encourages you to evaluate your possessions and make thoughtful decisions about what to keep, donate, or discard.
The connection between the Marie Kondo method and motivation
Just as Marie Kondo’s method helps individuals declutter their physical spaces, my work as a Motivation Specialist focuses on decluttering the mind, improving your mental health and unearthing what truly drives you. Both processes need you to think inside yourself and be willing to let go of what no longer serves you. When you clear out the unnecessary clutter, whether it’s in your environment or your mindset, you create space for motivation, creativity, and growth.
Understanding your motivations is similar to understanding what sparks joy in your life. In both cases, the goal is to align your actions with what matters most to you. This alignment can lead to enhanced productivity, greater satisfaction, and a clearer path to achieving your goals.
The five key steps of the KonMari method
- Commit to tidying up: Just as I encourage my clients to commit to understanding their motivations, the first step in Kondo’s method is to fully commit to decluttering.
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle: Visualising your ideal work and life environment can guide you in both decluttering and understanding what motivates you. It’s about creating a vision that aligns with your values.
- Tidy by category, not location: Like categorising your motivations (e.g achievement, recognition), Kondo’s approach encourages tackling one category at a time for greater effectiveness.
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy: When assessing your belongings, you ask if they bring joy. Similarly, evaluating your tasks and roles against your intrinsic motivators helps identify what energises you.
- Organise for easy access: Just as Kondo emphasises proper organisation, I focus on creating actionable strategies for leveraging your motivations to enhance performance.
Benefits of the KonMari method
Beyond creating a clutter-free home, the Marie Kondo method has far-reaching benefits that align with my work in motivation coaching:
- Enhanced focus and productivity: Clearing physical clutter can lead to a clearer mind, just as understanding your motivators can lead to increased focus on your goals.
- Emotional clarity: Letting go of items that no longer serve you builds emotional growth, similar to how recognising your motivations can lead to a deeper understanding of your personal and professional identity.
- Sustainable mindset: Adopting the KonMari method creates mindfulness, which is essential in my approach to motivation, being intentional about your choices leads to sustainable growth.
Tips for getting started
- Start small: If decluttering feels overwhelming, begin with a small area or category, just as I recommend starting with one aspect of your life at a time.
- Set aside time: Dedicate specific time blocks for both decluttering and self-reflection on what motivates you and where you get your energy from.
- Celebrate your progress: Acknowledge your achievements in both tidying up and understanding what gives you energy. Small wins can lead to bigger transformations.
The Marie Kondo method offers a fresh perspective on decluttering and organisation. By focusing on what truly brings you joy, you can create a living space that reflects your values and aspirations. In the same vein, understanding your motivations can transform your professional journey, leading to greater satisfaction and success.
