Medical device design consultancy TTP has released a new e-book exploring a faster, more scalable approach to evaluating MRI safety for active implantable medical devices (AIMDs), particularly systems with long conductive leads where RF-induced heating can present a significant development challenge.
The e-book examines MRI compatibility within the ISO 10974 framework, focusing on Tier 3 assessment and the determination of transfer functions. It outlines how frequency-domain computational modelling can enable faster lead iteration, reduce reliance on repeated phantom testing and provide earlier insight into MRI safety during development.
TTP’s Neurotechnology team explores how transfer functions can be modelled in minutes per case, allowing design changes to be evaluated earlier and with fewer physical prototypes. It also considers where simulation can replace exploratory testing and where experimental validation remains essential.
The publication reflects the growing expectation for broader MRI access for implant recipients, including full-body MRI access, and the need to address MRI compatibility earlier in the development process.
The e-book, A smarter way to design MRI-safe implants: Streamlining Tier 3 modelling for MRI compatibility design, will be relevant to AIMD developers looking to de-risk MRI safety earlier and accelerate progress towards MRI-conditional labelling.
