In my role at Cambridge Network, I have countless conversations every year with local organisations, both members and non-members, about the challenges they face in meeting their learning needs. A theme that comes up again and again, particularly for SMEs, is the frustration associated with engaging and effectively supporting younger team members who show strong leadership and management potential.
While the ambition to invest in graduate talent is strong, the capacity to actually deliver structured, impactful development in-house is often limited. The Cambridge Network Graduate Scheme has been created in direct response to this need, offering a high-quality learning experience that helps organisations create confident and capable future leaders. Here’s how it compares to traditional models and why it might be the right investment for your organisation.
Traditional graduate schemes: a quick overview
Most graduate schemes fall into one of two categories:
- Internal schemes which are run completely in-house by the organisation itself, including all parts of the recruitment, training, and development process. These are usually found in larger organisations who have dedicated learning and development teams.
- Sector-led schemes which are usually managed by some kind of industry body or special interest group, where graduates are sourced and matched with host organisations for a fixed period.
The Cambridge Network Graduate Scheme
Cambridge Network offers a more accessible, flexible, and locally relevant approach to the conventional graduate scheme format. Here’s how:
1. Choose Your Own Graduate
You can select one or more recent graduates from your existing employee pool to join the programme. As they are already employed by you, you will have had the opportunity to assess their suitability for the graduate scheme during their probationary period before committing to further invest in their development. Their established role within your business also means they’ll be ready to put their learning into action right away.
2. Local Relevance and Shared Learning
Graduates from multiple organisations come together for a year-long programme of leadership and management training, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the Cambridge Cluster. This format encourages knowledge-sharing across sectors and builds a strong, local peer network to support long-term professional growth.
3. Exclusive Cambridge Experience
The scheme utilises the unique setting of Cambridge, offering learning sessions in prestigious and often inaccessible local venues, access to mentors from across the Cambridge ecosystem and unmatched networking opportunities through Cambridge Network’s extensive connections.
Why this format works for employers
This scheme is ideal for organisations that want to invest in graduate talent without the overhead of running a full in-house programme. Benefits include:
- It’s a cost-effective way to access high-quality graduate training on a pay per person basis, perfect for organisations who want to support a small number of hand selected employees.
- Graduates can apply their learning to your business challenges straight away, helping to improve current working practices and drive innovation.
- It helps you create clear pathways for succession planning and retain high quality employees to develop into your future leaders.
- Being known as an organisation who takes investment in new employees seriously will give you an edge in the highly competitive local recruitment market.
By participating, your organisation also contributes to our broader goal - creating a shared standard of graduate training excellence across the Cambridge ecosystem and thereby strengthening our region’s global competitiveness.
What graduates gain
We’ve built this programme to give graduates the tools they need to grow into high quality leaders and managers. Graduates benefit from a structured development journey, including:
- Gaining an ILM qualification in Leadership and Management.
- Regular in-person development days focused on improving real-world leadership and management skills.
- Access to expert facilitators who regularly support local, national and international organisations to solve business challenges and improve management practices.
- Mentoring support from individuals external to their organisation.
- Access to a professional network that crosses industries and sectors.
Each graduate is expected to be fully committed to the learning programme and actively engage in all aspects of the scheme. This includes regularly attending scheduled in-person learning days (one per month) and dedicating additional time outside of these sessions to complete the ILM qualification assignments. To ensure meaningful participation, it is estimated that graduates will need to allocate approximately 10% of their working hours, equivalent to one full day every fortnight, to the programme for the duration of the year.
