Africa Week, 22nd - 26th February

A 5-day virtual event identifying opportunities for UK companies in selected African markets. Africa Week will showcase tangible business and partnership opportunities, develop relationships between UK companies and African stakeholders and promote knowledge sharing.  “Africa is the future and the UK has a huge and active role to play” Boris Johnson (UK-Africa Investment Summit, January 2020).  Join the Department for International Trade (DIT) in the East of England to discover the scope of opportunities which await your company in Africa.

Africa

Comprising 54 nations, 8 of which appear in the top 15 fastest growing economies in the world, Africa boasts a wealth of possibilities for UK exporters.  The event will be opened by Emma Wade-Smith OBE, her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Africa, followed by a panel discussion on strengthening the economic ties between the UK and Africa. The week will then be split to focus on a different sector each day.

 

Education: Monday 22nd February, 14:00 - 16:15
With a population of 1.3bn and a median age of 19, education is critical to Africa’s success.* The UK is one of Africa’s leading education partners and this session will highlight the opportunities available in the higher education and edtech sectors.

What to expect

• DIT Head of Education in Africa discussing why UK companies should include African nations in their export strategy, student recruitment and english language training

• DIT Commercial Officers from Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa highlighting the opportunities in those markets

• A panel discussion examining the opportunities and routes to market post COVID - Is the answer digital?

 

Life Science and Healthcare: Tuesday 23rd February, 10:00 - 15:45

The UK is a proud leader in digital health, healthcare systems and life science innovation. With the healthcare industry in Africa growing at 5% annually, there are a wealth of opportunities for UK companies on the continent.*

What to expect

• Opportunities in South Africa, Egypt and Kenya

• Developments in digital health

• How to negotiate like a local

• Regulations to be aware of

 

 

Sustainable Agri-Tech: Wednesday 24th February, 10:00 - 15:00

24% of all GDP across the African continent can be attributed to agriculture. With agri-business set to be a $1 trillion industry in Africa by 2030, and the UK a leader in agricultural innovation, the opportunities for British companies are immense.*

What to expect

• A panel discussion examining the opportunities for UK companies in protecting food security in Africa

• A presentation from Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture on Nigeria’s agricultural roadmap

• Presentations from DIT Commercial Officers in Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria as to where the opportunities lie for Agri-Tech companies

• The opportunity for companies to attend roundtables with DIT Commercial Officers in Africa to get targeted support and advice

 

Transition to renewable energy: Thursday 25th February, 10:00 - 15:45

With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) being hosted in the UK this year, addressing climate change and supporting a transition to a cleaner, low-carbon economy has become a priority. The morning session will examine the opportunities within renewable energy and the afternoon will look at how oil and gas companies can begin to transition to net zero carbon.

What to expect

• Presentations and a panel discussion on the opportunities within Renewable Energy with speakers including Energy Industries Council (EIC)l, DIT Sector Leads, Green Cape and Northlite Solar.

• Presentations and a panel discussion on the opportunities for companies looking to transition to net zero carbon with speakers including EIC, DIT Commercial Officers, Aggreko and Oil and Gas UK.

 

Infrastructure: Friday 26th February, 10:00 - 13:30

The UK has a strong reputation for delivering and contributing to infrastructure projects in Africa.

What to expect

• Lindsey Gilbert Crouch, Ghana’s DIT Country Director, discussing the rail and hospital opportunities in Ghana

• Scott Brownrigg, TEX ATC and Mott McDonald showcasing the opportunities within construction

 • Experts on the opportunities within mining

• Financial support available from UK Export Finance
