The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is seeking a proactive and organised Laboratory Technician to support the safe, effective and efficient operation of its biological laboratories and communal laboratory facilities.

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, you will provide technical support to ensure the smooth day-to-day operation of the Department's biological laboratories and teaching facilities. Working closely with researchers, students and professional services colleagues, you will help maintain a safe, efficient and well-organised laboratory environment, supporting a wide range of laboratory activities and shared facilities.

You will be responsible for preparing media and reagents, operating autoclaves, managing biological waste streams and maintaining laboratory consumables and communal facilities. The role also includes supporting biological safety and regulatory compliance through routine safety checks, maintaining laboratory documentation, contributing to standard operating procedures and risk assessments, and ensuring shared laboratory equipment and facilities remain clean, organised and fully operational.

You will have practical experience working as a laboratory technician within a biological laboratory environment and sound knowledge of laboratory techniques, biological safety and good laboratory practice. Experience of media preparation, autoclaving and supporting shared laboratory facilities would be advantageous. You will be well organised, have excellent attention to detail, good IT and communication skills, and enjoy working collaboratively to provide an excellent technical support service.
