Senior Communications, Engagement and Events Manager

The University of Cambridge is one of the world's oldest universities and leading academic centres. If you're looking for a new challenge and would like excellent benefits, extensive learning opportunities and a stimulating working environment in return for your skills and contribution, there could be a job here for you.

Could you be our next Senior Communications, Engagement and Events Manager?

The Cavendish Laboratory is seeking an experienced communications leader to head up our communications, events, and outreach function. Based in one of the world's most respected physics departments, this senior role offers scope to shape how we engage with our audiences at a pivotal moment of our development.

As a member of the Department's Senior Leadership Team, reporting to the Head of Operations, you will set the strategic direction for how we communicate across every channel and audience: from colleagues and students to alumni, industry partners, and the wider public. You will connect people to the science being done here and lead the outreach work that inspires the next generation of physicists.

You will lead a small team of managers and coordinators, providing clear direction, developing individual capability, and fostering a collaborative, open and supportive working environment. You will oversee the department's communications budget and take responsibility for the team's output across all areas of activity.

The scope of that activity is broad. Your work will span digital and print communications, social media, our website, a programme of events from public lectures to high-profile stakeholder gatherings, alumni and supporter publications, and an outreach programme reaching young people from Key Stage 2 to pre-university age. You will also act as an internal expert, advising senior colleagues on communications and engagement strategy, and building relationships with the University's central communications teams to coordinate joint campaigns and maximise impact.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience developing and delivering multi-channel communications and engagement strategies across diverse audiences and with multiple partners.

  • A track record of communicating scientific or technical subjects compellingly to non-specialist audiences.

  • Strong leadership and line management skills, with a proven ability to motivate and develop a team.

  • Experience working in complex stakeholder environments and across organisational boundaries.

  • Excellent editorial, writing, and proofreading skills, with rigorous attention to quality and brand.

  • Good working knowledge of social media platforms and digital analytics tools.

  • A relevant degree or equivalent professional experience. A background in science or science communication is desirable.
