Senior Microfluidics Engineer

The CompanyEvonetix is a start-up company which is set to revolutionize de novo gene synthesis as needed to facilitate the fast-growing and incredibly exciting field of synthetic biology.  Our technology is based upon a novel silicon array, manufactured with semiconductor microfabrication techniques and capable of independent control of many thousands of miniaturized reaction sites, allowing massive parallelism of the DNA synthesis process. Our community is a closely-knit multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electronic and software engineers, synthetic and surface chemists, physicists and biologists. As part of our growth strategy we have just relocated to state-of-the-art offices in central Cambridge, https://www.evonetix.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Evonetix_Press-Release_Office-move_30-10-19.pdfThe positionTo realise our ambition to place DNA synthesis in the hands of every researcher we are starting the design journey of the Evonetix instrument that will exploit the unique features of our novel silicon chip. We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to lead to the development of the microfluidics module.

You will contribute to the overall system architecture discussions, focussing on the microfluidics system concept definition, before working through prototyping phases to deliver our product to market.

In addition to the ground-up instrument design there is requirement to maintain and evolve the microfluidic elements of the test rigs and experimental platforms that our scientific team use for their research and development activities.

This is an early strategic appointment in the growth of the Mechanical Engineering team and there is scope to influence future recruits in the microfluidics area to complement your own skill set.

You will be degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering with significant industry experience including at least 5 years’ experience focussed on microfluidics system design, development and manufacture.

Essential experience

  • Track record in delivering microfluidic system and device designs
  • Experience in developing novel solutions where microfluidics flow control and thermal management influences complex chemical reactions
  • Direct experience of taking fundamental problem-solving ideas through to manufacturable solutions
  • Skilled in 3D CAD, preferably Solidworks

Desirable skills

  • Proficient with finite element analysis for fluidics systems and thermodynamic analysis
  • Experience of working within a quality management system, for example ISO13485
  • Project leadership/project management (line management experience not required)
