This practical workshop introduces more sophisticated features of Excel to help users work efficiently and confidently. You will learn how to manage multi-sheet workbooks, protect and validate data, and use analysis tools such as sorting, filtering, subtotals, pivot tables, sparklines and slicers.

Audience

This course is ideal for users who are comfortable with the basics of Excel and want to take their skills to the next level. It’s designed for those who regularly work with large spreadsheets and need to simplify their workflow using more advanced features. Attendance of the Excel Introductory course is recommended but not essential.

Objectives

The objectives of the course are to:

  • Use 3D worksheets and formulas to manage multi-sheet workbooks
  • Apply data validation and protection techniques to improve spreadsheet integrity
  • Analyse and summarise data using sorting, filtering, subtotals and pivot tables
  • Create dynamic visualisations using sparklines, charts and slicers

Data Validation

  • Controlling data entry
  • Customising messages and error alerts
  • Creating drop-down lists (with range names)

Protection

  • Adding passwords to files
  • Protecting cells from being altered
  • Go to function for cell selection

Working with Data

  • Highlighting data blocks quickly
  • Sorting – quick sort, multi-field sort, colour sort
  • Autofilter and using logical parameters
  • Subtotals – to summarise data

Pivot Tables / Charts

  • Understanding how they work
  • Manual report vs quick report
  • Adding and moving fields
