20mph roll-out continues in Abbey, Petersfield, Romsey and Coleridge

Cambridge City Council’s citywide 20mph project will reach its halfway point next month, with work to install 20mph signage across the city’s four eastern wards, and on Victoria Road, doubling the number of residential roads with 20mph limits.

The legal traffic order to formally complete the change is due to be made and sealed early next month with the new speed limits coming into effect on 11 December 2015. This will enable enforcement activity to be undertaken where there proves to be a need for it.

Cllr Kevin Blencowe, Executive Councillor for Planning Policy and Transport and chair of the council’s East Area Committee, said: “I am really pleased that we will shortly have two out of the city’s four administrative areas – north and east - and around half of our eligible city streets, subject to a maximum traffic speed of 20mph and that we are on track to complete the project, city-wide, before the summer of 2016.

“Setting 20mph as the norm for residential streets is a critical priority for the council, since it has been shown to reduce many of the adverse effects of motorised traffic, including the severity of road accidents. It also encourages greater levels of walking and cycling and improves people’s health. 20 really is plenty, wouldn’t you agree

“I am also really pleased that we have now been able to add in Victoria Road north of the river, following clear support from residents and ward councillors and due to the helpful and flexible response from the county council.”

Changes to traffic orders, which are necessary for the final phase of the project to cover the southern and western/central areas of the city, are due to be advertised by the county council before Christmas; and implemented by summer 2016.

The phased approach to implementing 20mph citywide has been necessary due to the scale of the work involved. It has led to some short term anomalies where some roads are included when neighbouring streets are not.  These anomalies will be rectified during 2016 when the project is completed citywide, including simpler signage across Cambridge.
