Addenbrooke’s ‘Our Way Awards’ honours specialist nurse

An oncology nurse specialist was named the ‘You Made A Difference Annual Winner’ at Addenbrooke’s hospital this week.

Kim Bennett, colo-rectal clinical nurse specialist, was selected from a shortlist of 24 staff who had also won the monthly ‘You Made A Difference Award’ throughout the year.

The patient who nominated Kim said “she was “extremely knowledgeable, thorough and professional without sacrificing humour and personal touch. She makes me feel like the most important patient that day.”

Kim is from Newmarket and trained in Ipswich. She nursed in Australia for a year before arriving at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she has stayed working within the cancer department for the past 20 years. Kim said “I was surprised and overwhelmed to be nominated for this award. For me it’s all about the patients, they will always come first. But I am truly honoured to be recognised for the work I do.  And I want to say a big thank you to the team I work with. It’s because of them, the patients and my managers that I come into work every day.”

The presentation formed part of the 5th ‘Our Way’ staff awards ceremony which took place earlier this week.

On making the award at the CUH ‘Our Way’ presentation, Director of Patient Experience, Brenda Hennessy quoted from the author, Mark Twain: “ ‘Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see’ and kindness has been a recurring theme throughout all the nominations received by the You Made a Difference panel.”
