Artwork celebrating Greta Thunberg exhibited in Waterstones Cambridge

Waterstones Cambridge is exhibiting a striking artwork inspired by Greta Thunberg. The piece was commissioned from artist Sophie Taylor by Waterstones and Allen Lane publishers in celebration of Greta’s Waterstones Author Of The Year 2019 win for 'No One Is Too Small To Make A Difference.'

Jonathan Austin, Waterstones Cambridge describes it as a “vibrant and exciting piece of art that reflects the impact Greta Thunberg has had on the world this year.”

Sophie has created three different pieces inspired by Greta’s activism and the Cambridge bookshop is one of six selected Waterstones shops across the country to receive an exclusive A1 print.

Sophie Taylor says: “Each of my pieces centres Greta as the focal point, but I have tried to emphasise the growth and life of flora and fauna. I gravitated towards the vibrancy of youth in colour and the scale of nature. I have always been inspired by the topic of scale, and how certain aspects of life can feel gigantic to some but microscopic to others. Climate change is one of the largest scaled problems we face -- as Greta would put it, 'Our house is on fire!”

Greta Thunberg’s rallying cry for the protection of our planet could not have escaped anyone’s attention in 2019. Since publication in May, and supported by passionate bookseller recommendation, No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference has reached hundreds of thousands of readers. Her collected speeches form one of the most influential books of 2019 and for this Greta Thunberg has been awarded Waterstones Author of the Year.

Clement Knox, Waterstones Non-Fiction Buyer says: “Greta Thunberg’s journey from her solitary school strike to the United Nations in less than a year is surely one of the most remarkable stories of 2019. Greta is an inspirational figure and we wanted to commission something that would capture the impact she has had. We couldn’t be happier with Sophie’s Greta-inspired pieces that encapsulate the urgency of her message and the positive movement she has helped build and mobilize to fight the climate crisis.’

Penguin Books have produced an expanded, strikingly designed edition for Christmas. Featuring five new speeches and accompanied by over sixty images charting Greta’s extraordinary journey, it powerfully depicts the game-changing impact her activism has had in a very short amount of time.

No One Is Too Small To Make A Difference, expanded edition, ISBN: 9780241453445, Allen Lane, RRP £14.99 | extent: 144 pages

GRETA THUNBERG was born in 2003. In August 2018, she decided not to go to school one day, starting a strike for the climate outside the Swedish Parliament. Her actions ended up sparking a global movement for action against the climate crisis, inspiring millions of pupils to go on strike for our planet, and earning her the prestigious Prix Liberté, as well as a Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

Greta is donating all her royalties from both editions of the book to charity.

Sophie Taylor specialises in illustration, mostly murals and artwork for the hospitality industry. From her most corporate to personal works, she tries to make creativity shout the loudest, to be bold in her choices as a designer but also to balance that with an empathy for the artwork’s environment. She studied in London, before returning to Warwickshire, where she grew up.
