Business Lecture explores the interfaces between science and engineering

Cambridge Network’s popular business lecture series returns on Wednesday 6 November with a talk by Professor Nigel Slater from the University of Cambridge Department for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.  This multidisciplinary department works at the interfaces between engineering, chemistry, biology and physics, forming collaborations which one day will have a beneficial effect on society.

The fusion of leading biotechnology research with chemical engineering skills, within an ethos of commercial awareness, supports the department’s continuing development and discovery at the science-engineering interface. Their work covers healthcare, processes, materials, metrology, modelling and innovation, with significant contributions to the University’s initiatives on energy, food and healthcare.

Additionally, the department has run a successful Master in Bioscience Enterprise programme, now in its 18th year. This intense nine-month degree is a multi-disciplinary biotechnology and business couse, designed for high-achieving individuals with an enthusiasm for enterprise. The course equips students with the requisite skills in enterprise, management and entrepreneurship required to take up executive roles, establish and build biotechnology companies or work in the life sciences consultancy sector.

The department's new building (pictured) on the University’s West Cambridge site has been designed specifically for interaction and collaboration, internally and with industry.

Professor Nigel Slater's research focus is on the manufacture and formulation of biopharmaceuticals including therapeutic proteins, DNA, viruses and cells.   His current research work is on the design and manufacture of AAV gene vectors and nanoparticles for ocular therapy. He also researches procedures to improve the preservation of cells and especially pancreatic islets for the treatment of diabetes. He enjoys wide international collaborations, particularly in China as a Qiushi Chair Professor at the University of Zhejiang and an Honorary Professor at the Universities of Tianjin and Sichuan.

Free to all Cambridge Network members, the lecture takes place from 6pm - 8.30pm at the Dept of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Philippa Fawcett Drive, Cambridge CB3 0AS.
