The former schoolboy footballer, who started his business career selling buttons outside his home in the East End, passed on some of the secrets of his success to students from the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy.
He told the students he had started out with absolutely nothing - but that had not deterred him.
“I’m trying to share with you the distance from that poverty to where I am today. It’s hard to believe, but it’s achievable. What I’m urging you to take on board is that if I could do it, you can do it,” he said.
Paul Herbert, PJEA manager at CRC, said it had been an inspirational masterclass for the students.
“David Gold’s story is a real rags to riches tale, and his masterclass was a fascinating insight into how he climbed out of poverty through his business and entrepreneurial talents to become a hugely successful entrepreneur and one of the richest men in the country.
“The students were inspired by his story and we are immensely grateful to him for the time he gave to all of them.”
David Gold overcame numerous setbacks in his career to become one of Britain’s most successful businessmen. He transformed the fortunes of struggling Birmingham City Football Club before selling it for £82.5million, and now has a large stake in West Ham, where he is chairman. He also heads Gold Group International.
The Cambridge students visited Westminster Kingsway College for the masterclass with PJEA students from other colleges in the region.
