Cambridge Design Partnership shortlisted for Elektra Awards 2013

Cambridge Design Partnership is excited to announce that it has been shortlisted for the Educational Support Award at this year’s Elektra European Electronics Industry Awards.

The Elektra Awards celebrate the achievements of individuals and companies in the European electronics industry. The finalists were selected by an independent panel of judges from a cross section of electronics engineering companies and disciplines.

Cambridge Design Partnership’s entry highlights the ongoing work that the company is doing to inspire young people to become the scientists and engineers of the future. The company is proud to sponsor the Bloodhound Project, the UK’s attempt to build a jet and rocket powered car that will go over 1,000 miles per hour. Cambridge Design Partnership has provided engineering expertise to the Project by finalizing the design of the steering wheel. It supports Bloodhound’s fundamental mission of confronting and overcoming challenges that at first seem impossible using science, technology and engineering, and sharing the project journey with young people in schools and universities around the world.

And so, Cambridge Design Partnership held its first school workshop earlier this year, led by the company’s own STEM Ambassador and a team of engineers, focusing on this exciting example of UK engineering. The students were shown the design process around the Bloodhound steering wheel, and then worked to build Bloodhound balloon cars, racing them with speeds measured by a timing system specially built by CDP.

The school later reported that as a result of this workshop, 80% of the students now want a career ‘designing or making things’.

In other initiatives, the company offers young people a chance to gain valuable hands-on experience and technical skills through two annual Year in Industry placements, and encourages its engineers to become STEM Ambassadors.

Commenting on the awards, Jez Clements, Partner, Cambridge Design Partnership said, “Through a range of activities and investment, both financial and practical, our objective is to show young people that a career in engineering or science gives them the opportunity to solve issues and challenges, on a global scale, through creativity and innovative thinking. It’s encouraging that this kind of work is being recognised and supported by industry.”

The winners will be announced at the Elektra award ceremony, which takes place at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on 27th November 2013.
