Cambridge festival helps plug gap in industry experience

Only 21 per cent of people in the games sector have taken part in work experience prior to entering the industry; lower than any other sector in creative media, according to a new Creative Skillset report. It states that the lack of work experience is forcing games companies to look across the creative industry to fill a vacancy.

Brains Eden, produced by Creative Front, gives young games creators exclusive access to world-leading games studios so they can show off their skills, enhance their portfolios and be in the running for a top industry job. Hosted by Anglia Ruskin University, the festival is back for its seventh year on 26 June, when 30 teams from across UK and Europe will descend on Cambridge.

Brains Eden generates real industry jobs; so far 21 students have received internships and six individuals secured full time roles as a direct result of the festival. Past competitors of Brains Eden gaming festival, Joe Kinglake and Luke Botham, are now full time employees at Guerrilla Games Amsterdam, thanks to the opportunities the festival opened up for them.

Kinglake commented: “Brains Eden is a fantastic event for aspiring developers, providing a unique opportunity to practise, improve and showcase your skills.

“Brains Eden is a great way to demonstrate not only your technical and creative abilities but your passion for video game development. The people you will meet at the festival are invaluable in starting your career in the games industry.”

The festival is supported by some of the biggest technology and gaming companies in the world including Guerrilla Cambridge, PlayStation First, ARM, Unity and Jagex, because it provides a platform to meet future talent in an environment similar to the workplace.

"Unity provides anyone from hobbyist to AAA studio with the game development tools to build amazing, cross-platform content said Antony Douglas, Vice President EMEA of Unity Technologies.

“We are giving away five Unity Pro Licences worth £1,000 each to the team awarded Best Game at this year’s festival. It’s a fantastic opportunity for young games creators to get hands-on experience with our software before entering the industry.”
