The evening event at Gonville and Caius College will explore business opportunities in China with Chinese partners in the context of the world economy; it will address innovative developments in the application of Big Data relevant to economic and business management.
Organiser Professor Alan Barrell, a renowned Cambridge entrepreneur with significant links with China, has pulled together the timely event for sponsor Big Business Data, a Chinese company that has set up in London and the St John’s Innovation Centre in Cambridge.
Prof Barrell said: “Despite slowdown in the growth of the world economy and numbers of challenges often highlighted in the Western press, China continues its steady progress towards becoming the world’s No 1 economy.
“It is often overlooked that in three decades, despite many problems, China has lifted 600 million people from poverty to a decent life. For Western companies, not least UK companies post-Brexit, China offers very significant opportunities for trade and business development – in both home and Chinese markets.
“This could indeed be ‘A Golden Age’ as proposed during the 2015 visit of President Xi Jinping to the UK. The rhetoric can become reality only by more courageous and constructive steps being taken by companies in the West and China, to develop deeper mutual understanding of interests and culture – and by investing in joint activities.”
There will be two principal speakers at the event – Jinny Yan, who is chief economist at ICBC (International and Commercial Bank of China) and Dr Daniel Pu, senior vice-president and general manager of Big Business Data (BBD).
Ms Yan will share her broad knowledge and experience of the Chinese economy within the context of global trade and set the scene for companies and investors keen to start or accelerate activities with Chinese partners in Chinese markets.
Dr Pu will present some of the latest developments in the application of Big Data to business management – including credit rating and performance assessment – with particular emphasis on the SME sector. He will address how the relationship and collaboration between banks and companies needing finance and credit can be enhanced for the good of all parties and thereby to regional and national economies.
In particular, Dr Pu can show how a major Chinese bank – Chongqing Bank – has taken a lead in developing SME business by the innovative application of analytics and Big Data.
His company, BBD, is a sponsor of the Cambridge seminar. BBD is a fast growing enterprise founded three years ago in Chengdu, now operating in the US, Europe and other parts of Asia as well as China. It recently opened an office locally at St John’s Innovation Centre.
Its vision is to bring new approaches and software systems to enable governments, investors, financial institutions and companies to analyse, plan, prepare and monitor performance and prospects in the world of the ‘new economy.’
It argues that this will enable better decision making and more efficient management at a time of rapid transition of national economies from old to new.
There will also be an opportunity at the Cambridge event to explore further the economic and business opportunities being created through China’s exciting ‘One Belt One Road’ initiative.
Places at the invitation-only seminar are strictly limited so business leaders are advised to apply swiftly to Alan Barrell at [email protected] Applicants must give their full name, company/organisation and position/ title.
