CambridgeIP wins innovation funding to develop tools to explore big data

CambridgeIP, with the University of Essex and the Institute of Engineering and Technology (the IET), will collaborate on a UK government-funded project to develop new tools and methods to enable easier exploration of complex scientific literature.

CambridgeIP has been utilizing big data environments and tools for the last five years and this represents a significant opportunity for us to create tools that we believe are currently missing from the big data space.
- Quentin Tannock, Chairman

CambridgeIP, with the University of Essex and The IET, have been awarded a significant grant by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, and the EPSRC to develop new algorithms and methods that will enable data explorers find relevant information from large corpuses of complex data. The end goal is to enable users to find relevant information more quickly in the growing sea of data and to provide users with tools to reproduce methods of finding information as the data landscape continually grows and evolves.

CambridgeIP’s collaboration with the IET and the University of Essex has been part funded by Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, funding competition “Data exploration – creating new insight and value” in a project titled “Innovative tools to enable exploration of complex and specialised data sets”. Innovate UK and the EPSRC will contribute over £260,000 to the project.

In the age of Big Data, knowledge workers - individuals, companies and organisations whose primary focus is knowledge and information extraction and usage - find it increasingly difficult to search for and identify accurate and relevant information. In the domain of scientific literature and IP search, where the underlying corpora are growing at a huge rate, this is a daunting task and human expertise and involvement remain critical. This project aims to develop a suite of tools that will enable users to search for and identify relevant information within such a corpus more efficiently and effectively.

The methods developed will deploy new search paradigms together with semantic-based analysis, domain and lexical linguistic ontologies in order to understand the user needs based on the underlying domain of application and subsequently enable accurate information retrieval through enhanced search and cross-reference of information. The project aims to develop new tools for sharing of search strategies identified by observing and understanding patterns in expert users' search behaviours.

Project results will be tested with end users from CambridgeIP’s significant commercial networks, including over 17,000 registered users of CambridgeIP's online systems.

Quentin Tannock (Chairman, CambridgeIP) said: “CambridgeIP has been utilizing big data environments and tools for the last five years and this represents a significant opportunity for us to create tools that we believe are currently missing from the big data space. If successful this project could revolutionize the way knowledge workers work with specialised datasets, and importantly, how they collaborate when searching big data. CambridgeIP are particularly excited to be working with a key UK research institution specialising in big data and its associated areas of research, the University of Essex”.

Professor Maria Fasli (Head of School and Professor at University of Essex, School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering) said :“The University of Essex is delighted to work with CambridgeIP on exploring truly complex data sets containing a wealth of information. Our expertise combined with the commercial knowledge and experience of CambridgeIP will enable us to create novel solutions and algorithms, extracting additional value from the data libraries”.
