The Murray Edwards College Internship Initiative, now in its third year, offers exciting internship or work placement opportunities for our students within successful and highly regarded organisations. Following two years of positive feedback (from both employer organisations and students), the College aims to expand the scheme further for 2014.
Students come from a wide variety of disciplines and can provide excellent research, analysis, report-writing and general operational support. The College can work with you in formulating a Job Description/Candidate Specification to suit your specific requirements.
The Internships/Work Experience can be paid or unpaid (with travel expenses where appropriate), and be anything from 2 – 8 weeks in duration, depending on the employer’s needs.
Benefits and expectations
Murray Edwards College sees internships and work placements as mutually beneficial to employing organisations and to its students.
Employing organisations gain access to high achieving and ambitious young women, enabling them:
- To assess recruitment potential ‘on the job’
- To showcase the career opportunities they offer
- To benefit from highly motivated, well-prepared candidates
- To expand awareness of their professional field and its appeal
Undergraduates gain access to successful and forward-looking organisations, enabling students:
- To explore job sectors and job functions at first hand
- To showcase and advance their own skills and aptitude
- To develop the professionalism of their approach
- To expand their career networks
Duration and Timing
A range of models will be considered, from short work placements (typically 1-2 weeks) to longer paid internships or projects (typically 4-10 weeks).
The Initiative is targeted primarily at first and second year students, who would usually undertake the internship in their summer vacation (late June to late September 2014). Third and fourth year students are also invited to participate, and may be available for longer or at other times.
The College aims to be as flexible as possible about the timing and duration of internships, as well as the application process, as this flexibility can be important to participating organisations.
Pay and Conditions
Opportunities may be paid, unpaid or expenses only. It would generally be expected that the more of a contribution the student is making (and the longer the placement), the more likely it is they would be paid for their work.
College support
The College facilitates the Initiative by promoting opportunities to students and by offering advice to them about applying and preparing. The success of the internship/placements is measured from the perspective of both the organisation and the student, to ensure satisfactory outcomes for all parties.
