CRC fees waiver boosts apprenticeships

A ‘No Fees for SMEs’ offer by Cambridge Regional College to mark National Apprenticeship Week has helped boost apprenticeships in the region.

Employers took advantage of the offer worth up to £600 to sign up nearly 40 apprentices on programmes ranging from warehousing to hospitality.

Among the organisations helped by the week-long fees waiver were a housing association, motor vehicle business, education company, food production business and a restaurant.

Angela Hughes, CRC’s contracts manager for apprenticeships, said the money-saving offer had been extremely successful.

“Employers sometimes need a helping hand when times are tough, so we decided to waive all employer fees for SMEs to mark Apprenticeship Week and encourage businesses to take on an apprentice,” she said.

“The response has been amazing. We are delighted that the offer has been so successful and that we have been able to help smaller businesses who can be reluctant to take on an apprentice because of the fees involved.”

CRC is one of the biggest providers of apprenticeship programmes in the eastern region, with a record number of more than 2,200 apprentices currently in training with more than 700 employers.

The offer, which ran from February 6 to 10, was open to small and medium businesses and applied to nearly 30 different apprenticeship programmes, from business and administration to retail.
