David gears up for 300-mile cycle challenge

A keen cyclist who underwent a knee replacement just two years ago is gearing up to cycle 300 miles in four days to support the Papworth Trust.

David Martin signed up to the charity’s ‘Country to Coast’ challenge after being inspired on a daily basis by the work of the Trust.

David, the director of external relations at the charity, will today (Thursday 9th July) start the gruelling cycle ride which sees him start at Papworth Trust’s Kerry Farm and ends at its Waveney Centre in Lowestoft on Sunday.

David, 54, who lives in Little Shelford, said: “I hope to raise around £2,000 from the challenge and due to my involvement in the charity, I know that every single penny will make a real difference to the lives of the disabled people we work with.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me. Every time I’m struggling up a big hill, I will think about the money raised and it will spur me on.”

David, whose previous cycling best was 200 miles in Holland, admitted he was fortunate to be able to take his place in the challenge after undergoing a total knee replacement two years ago.

His training was also not without its difficulties after he ended up in Addenbrooke's Hospital’s A&E department on three separate occasions after being bitten by deer ticks on the head while cycling.

But he added: “Training has gone well and I am now chomping at the bit to get going.”
