The Landbeach-based charity – which has a second shop on Newmarket Road in Cambridge – is calling for talented local business professionals with time to spare to get in touch. The organisation is looking for individuals with a willingness to share their expertise to effect positive social change and a desire to help an established local charity deliver on its strategic five-year plan.
To broaden the range of skills already available via existing board members, Emmaus Cambridge is looking for trustees with a track record in retail, building / planning and legal work. Applicants should ideally have experience of working at a senior level, the ability to think creatively, an open mind, and the capacity to give staff and companions advice as they work on the development of the charity.
Emmaus Cambridge is a social enterprise that gives formerly homeless people a place to live, meaningful voluntary work; and a sense of belonging. Around 30 companions (the name used for Emmaus residents) live at the charity’s site in Landbeach. There, they learn new skills and restore their feeling of self worth in a community where the ethos is about giving something back to those less fortunate than yourself.
Emmaus Cambridge currently has seven trustees, who meet four times a year and get involved with a number of different sub-committees.
Steve Cook, a member of the Emmaus Cambridge board of trustees since 2012, said: “This is a great opportunity for a local business professional to step forward and help a Cambridge charity that makes a real difference to people’s lives. Emmaus Cambridge is a successful enterprise in its own right and there are many facets to our work that would prove fascinating to anyone looking to give something back through voluntary work.”
Anyone interested in a trustee role at Emmaus Cambridge should contact Steve Cook, Chair of Trustees on 07872 493815 for an informal discussion. Further information about Emmaus Cambridge and its work can be found at: www.emmauscambridge.org
Emmaus Communities offer homeless people a home, work and the chance to regain self-respect in a supportive community environment. Residents (known as Companions) work full time in the Community business, re-selling donated furniture and other household items. Communities aim to become self-supporting through their business, with any surplus used to help others in need.
