Excellence in Sport lectures scale the heights

Two special Excellence in Sport lectures, both free and open to the public, will take place in Cambridge this month as part of Anglia Ruskin University’s Sportober Fest series of events.

On Monday 8 October (5.30-6.30pm), badminton player Gail Emms MBE will talk about her experiences as a top-level sportswoman. During her career she won World and European gold medals and an Olympic silver medal at the Athens Games in 2004.

Gail, who now appears across different media outlets commentating on sport as well as delivering motivational talks to businesses, will discuss the highs and lows of being an elite performer, and the event will include a Q&A session.  To reserve a place, visit https://sportober-fest-gail-emms.eventbrite.co.uk

On Monday 22 October (5.30-6.30pm) scientist Dr Melanie Windridge (pictured) will be speaking about her journey to the top of the world.  Earlier this year Melanie climbed Everest, and her physical preparations for the trip were supported by the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences team at Anglia Ruskin University.

Melanie will talk about her ultimate endurance challenge – where science plays a huge part in performance and survival – and how advances in science and technology enable people to survive extremes.  She will field questions at the end of her talk.  To reserve a place, visit https://sportoberfest-melanie-windridge.eventbrite.co.uk

Anglia Ruskin’s Excellence in Sport lectures are part of an ongoing series organised by the Cambridge Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences.  Previous talks have featured former England cricket captain Graham Gooch, Olympic javelin bronze medallist Goldie Sayers, and Toni Minichiello, coach of Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Both of this month’s events - part of Anglia Ruskin University’s Sportober Fest series, free and open to the general public - will take place in Anglia Ruskin’s new Science Centre on the Cambridge campus.
