The recent devastating fire at Asahi Kasei Microsystems' (AKM) semiconductor plant in Nobeoka City, Japan, has destroyed one of the company's primary manufacturing facilities.
"We are keeping a proactive eye on things to assist our customers," said John Harley, OSI Electronics UK's Director Business Development.
"We are fortunate in having a global supply network through being part of the OSI group, which has a $120m+ budget for purchasing electronic, electrical and mechanical components via our offices in the Americas, Asia, the Far East and Europe.
"It means rather than purchasing components autonomously, we work within the group to buy with the power of the big purchaser.
"This also enables us to to find new sources quickly when there's a supply chain failure.
"The fire at AKM comes on top of all the other supply problems created by the Covid pandemic and Brexit, as my colleague Derek Williams reported earlier this month.
"I echo his advice for customers to consider order placement urgently to secure inbound material – while we have build capacity and control over our assembly, material lead-times are increasing on a daily basis."
