Funding to drive forward growth at SMART Biosystems

Cambridge based SMART Biosystems UK Ltd has just been awarded £50,000 to drive forward plans to develop technology and grow the business.

SMART Biosystems  develop, construct and operate Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Biogas plants and installations across the world. The plants are optimised to use waste only.

The funding will be used to build on the work SMART Biosystems began with their previous Agri-Tech grant (£60,000) in 2014 and install and test the feedstock pre-treatment Hydrolysis component in new and existing AD plants.

Once installed in one of their AD plants in East Anglia, SMART Biosystems will conduct a six-month testing period with the help of top UK engineering consulting companies and universities to run mechanical and software tests, to check the reliability and efficiency of the Hydrolyser on various temperatures and pressures before it is fully commercialised and launched in the market. When complete, the technology will help SMART Biosystems become a technology leader offering UK knowhow and special components to the international biogas and waste treatment markets.

Mark Reeve, Chairman of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership, said:

“SMART Biosystems have demonstrated a strong commitment to the development of their feedstock pre-treatment Hydrolysis component for AD plants, and we are pleased to support the next phase of their work. This technology positions SMART Biosystems as an international leader in the AD field, and we look forward to seeing the testing work get underway.”

Ypatios Moysiadis, Managing Director of Smart Biosystems, said:

“Our collaboration with LEP, and the funding we have received had been instrumental in helping our company establish a competitive edge while developing our innovative module for AD installations. Their help has taken us one step closer to commercialisation, and their continued support gives us the level of confidence we need as a small company, to pursue this opportunity to the end.”

The Eastern Agri-Tech Growth Initiative is run by the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP) with support from New Anglia LEP, Norfolk County Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, and the local authorities covering this area.
