Games development lecturer shortlisted for Bafta YGD award

An inspirational lecturer at Cambridge Regional College has been shortlisted for a Bafta YGD award after being nominated for the honour by his students.

Michael Warburton, who teaches computer games development and launched the college’s innovative Rizing Games company, will be walking down the red carpet for the glittering awards ceremony in London this week.

He is one of 15 outstanding individuals shortlisted for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts Young Games Designer (YGD) Mentor Award – the first award of its kind for Bafta. The winner will be announced at the YGD awards ceremony on 25 July.

Games design students who nominated Michael said he was “inspiring, passionate, caring and skilled” and had set them all on the path to great careers.

Bafta says the new mentor award “recognises individuals who have made an effort to inspire and mentor young people to learn more about programming and game design skills”.

Michael, who helped his students exhibit their games on a world platform at E3 2015 winning them the accolade ‘School of Dreams’, said he was “amazed and humbled” to be nominated for the award.

“It is great working with the students and to see them apply their knowledge to creating real games,” he said. “Rizing Games has developed into a fantastic platform for their work.”
