The £10 million specialist science college for 14 to 19 year-olds, described as “visionary” and a “brilliant” concept, will be built in Robinson Way, adjacent to Cambridge’s renowned biomedical campus, and open in September 2014.
Sponsored by Cambridge Regional College and Cambridge University Health Partners, it is backed by leading employers including Wellcome Sanger Trust, Napp Pharmaceuticals, Babraham Institute and the Medical Research Council
Dr Huppert said the UTC would be a perfect fit to Cambridge’s large cluster of high-tech companies.
“It is really good to be here at the ground-breaking and my huge congratulations on the building and the organisations for the leadership and vision that made it happen,” he said.
CRC principal Anne Constantine said Cambridge was a city of innovation and the UTC would be part of its exciting future.
“UTCs are re-imagining secondary education. This UTC will be part of Cambridge’s exciting future, giving young people an early experience of the work of the research institutes, the companies and the healthcare providers through the real life projects and the direct contact with professionals that are at the heart of the UTC curriculum,” she said.
“It is a brilliant idea and it has had an excellent buy-in from the biomedical science and cleantech sectors. We are looking forward to many more companies coming on board as the concept becomes a reality through this building and its opening next year.”
Professor Rallison, who attended the ceremony on behalf of Cambridge University, congratulated CUHP for their initiative in setting up the new UTC.
“I wish it well for the future and hope and trust the interaction between the school and Addenbrooke’s and Cambridge Biomedical Campus will prove to be fruitful and beneficial to all sides and go from strength to strength in the future,” he said.
The new college will be built by BAM Construction, builders of the £175m MRC’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology next door to the Robinson Way site. It will be constructed on land released by Long
Road Sixth Form College.
