Health Secretary Matt Hancock visits Cambridge University Hospitals

Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday (Monday) visited Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to discover more about plans to build a new Addenbrooke’s.

Following on from last week’s government announcement of seed funding for CUH to plan a new hospital, Mr Hancock said: “It’s incredibly exciting to come to Addenbrooke’s which is going to build one of the finest research hospitals in the world and bring the world-beating research here in Cambridge to improve the lives of patients and to save lives. I have been hearing about the plans. The team here are incredibly motivated. We are bringing the almost one billion pounds of money over the next decade that is going to make sure we give the best possible care to the people of Cambridge and across the region and really translate those scientific discoveries in Cambridge into a reality.”

CUH chief executive Roland Sinker said: “Our vision for a new world-leading research hospital in Cambridge is being developed out of the needs of citizens, patients, GPs, community services and social care into plans that meets these requirements, whilst bringing in the very best of innovation from the University and industry.

“At Addenbrooke’s and The Rosie hospitals we are uniquely poised to revolutionise healthcare. We’ve been working closely over a long period of time with government, patients and healthcare system partners to respond to rapidly growing demand for hospital and other services.

“A transformation of the workforce, digital technology and relationships with research and industry will be central in meeting the challenge. Our unbeatable location on the Cambridge biomedical campus will enable us to deliver on the Government’s long term plan for health and social care around wellness, prevention, early diagnosis and precision medicine.

“If anywhere can find the answers that create the future of healthcare, I’m confident that Cambridge can.”
