Launching soon: the Salimetrics Domestic Canine Programme

Involved in animal welfare? Testing analytes and biomarkers in saliva enables measurement of individual differences in stress- and exercise-related physiology in the context of domesticated canines’ everyday social worlds, training programmes, work days, and competitions.

Salimetrics can now offer assessments of biological changes, such as stress, in relation to changes in dogs’ behavior, daily structure, and routines. This biofeedback can be used to fine-tune actions taken to improve the welfare, quality of life of their dog.

Stress in Everyday Life

Research suggests that anxiety and distress among domesticated canines can be commonplace for specific individuals and breeds and is more frequent in some circumstances than others. Pet owners can collect saliva samples before and after stressful events (e.g.,separation, outings, visitors, home alone, interaction with other dogs).

Saliva samples are analysed for cortisol – a well-established biomarker of the psychobiology of the stress response (Chrousos & Gold, 1992) – and data is provided to enable owners to fine-tune schedules, activities, and interventions using objective biological indicators. Metrics provided will show the magnitude of change in salivary cortisol before and after events of interest.
